Hazards of ‘Spent’ Fuel Pool

“Studies show that the key risk posed by spent nuclear fuel involves a release of radiation that could harm human health or the environment. The highest consequence event posing such a risk would be a self-sustaining fire in a drained or partially drained spent fuel pool, resulting in a severe widespread release of radiation.” – U.S. Government Accounting Office, August 2012

Massachusetts’ Attorney General Martha Coakley presented testimony from Dr. Gordon Thompson and testimony from Dr. Jan Beyea in 2006 to contest Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station’s application to extend it’s license to operate for an additional 20 years. These documents assert that a spent fuel pool fire could result in $488 Billion in property damage, 24,000 cancers, and contaminate property for hundreds of miles downwind.
