Pilgrim Ranked #2 in U.S. for Earthquake Risk by NRC

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission ranks the Pilgrim plant in Plymouth, Mass. at #2 highest risk nationwide of nuclear core damage from an earthquake. New seismic data for Eastern states boost Pilgrim’s risk seven times higher than the previous estimate. The Indian Point reactor in Buchanan, NY ranks #1.

Listen to Beyond Nuclear’s reactor specialist, Paul Gunter explain this (22-minutes, audio)

May 9th the NRC prioritized detailed earthquake risk analysis for 21 Central and Eastern U.S. reactors.

Pilgrim’s nuclear reactor is one of only six in the U.S. using the same GE Boiling Water Reactor model 3 and GE Mark I containment system as the Fukushima reactor that melted down after the tsunami in 2011.
