The Orleans Democratic Town Committee brought this Resolution to the Massachusetts Democratic State Convention in Springfield on September 19th, where it passed overwhelmingly:
A RESOLUTION PROTECTING THE CITIZENS OF THE COMMONWEALTH FROM THE THREATS POSED BY NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS
Whereas the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth Massachusetts and the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in Seabrook, NH, pose unreasonable threats to the lives, health, environment, and economy of the residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Therefore it is hereby resolved that:
Massachusetts Democrats urge the MA state legislature to improve nuclear plant safety by passing legislation currently pending before the legislature
- improving emergency preparedness (H.2167),
- providing radiological monitoring and evacuation plans within 50 miles of nuclear plants (H. 2030, H.2031),
- assessing plant owners fees for failing to put used fuel rods into dry cask storage, (S.1797), and
- for a decommissioning reserve (S.1798), and calling for ending thermal and radiological pollution of adjacent waters.
